Adding Foil Over an Origami Paper Box

Parchment paper cardsShiny new techniques are fun to learn, foiling is one of these. I don't think it matters which laminator or heat transfer foil you use, if you just follow the instructions on the machine. I tried the glue stamps, the distress inks, the iron and I found the results vaguely unsettling, in that the results were unpredictable. Now unpredictable is fine, as long as the surprise is a good one, but without the laminator to heat transfer the foil, the surprise was often not so good. So, I got a laminator. After all, I already had the foils; I wanted it to actually work and it did. The Dress Form, "Rose Corset", was a stamp and I used Martha Stewart's glue stamp and some refill laser toner. The results were more distressed than the actual printed image, but for the image, it worked.

Since I got the foils first, I got the laminator that was paired with it and took thicker paper. However, having watched way too many Youtubes, I think just get one with good reviews. Joann's sells The Minc, and the corresponding foils. Michael's still sells The Purple Cow. I got mine at MyBinding.com: Tamerica / Tashin SM330 13″ Pouch Laminator. Just be sure that you use the foil that is made to be applied with heat. If your office, school or neighbor has one, try that. In theory, Heidi Swapp's foils should work with any of them. In theory. In the ideal, theoretical, and Youtube world, all supplies are interchangeable. I got my foils at www.colorfoils.com, the sampler pack, and was not disappointed. Tons of foil, a carrier, really nice quantities, varieties, and colors. For a carrier, I actually just used a folded piece of copy paper over the card and ran it through, twice. One way and then turned sideways from that and ran it a second time. Just lovely results, which I combined with other techniques for fun cards.

Materials: For all 4 cards, refer to the photos for each card, plus a sample of the cold press foil: the Maple Leaf

  • Laser printer – The settings need to be the darkest possible. Sometimes you have to search for all the settings available. The foil sticks to the toner, which is largely plastic.
  • Laminator: Tamerica / Tashin SM330 13″ Pouch Laminator
  • Foils: Colorfoils.com – I got the sample pack. Use any brand for laminators. Be cautious here, since the foil has to be a heat transfer foil. Both Martha Stewart and Tim Holtz make cold transfer foils. The results are distressing, meaning unpredictable and they are not made to stick to laser toners.
  • Big Shot or other embossing equipment that will take the Cuttlebug folders and die cuts.
  • Paper-Papers: Parchment Gunmetal and White, either text or cover, both work fine. Curious Skin Indigo and Emerald 100 lb cover. Pure Gold 92lb cover.
  • Martha Stewart punches: French Scroll & Hydrangeas Edge Punch RETIRED, so use your favorite.
  • Embossing folder: Cuttlebug, name unknown: tiny flowers. Any will do.
  • Tim Holtz distress pad: Faded Jeans.
  • Markers for coloring the butterfly.
  • Jolee's Blue Jeweled Flowers Stickers. Pearls & colored crystals.
  • Red Liner Tape, 1/4″, Gilding Flakes, Red Blaze & Tim Holtz, Rub 'n Scrub
  • Cosmic Shimmer Gilding Glue or your choice.
  • Die Cut: Memory Box: Tristan Butterfly & Prim Poppy.
  • Stamp: Rose Corset by Stampendous.
  • Stamping Antistatic Pad, or your choice, so the extra laser toner doesn't stick, or you will be scraping unwanted foil spots off the card.
  • Scoring template and bone folder.

Instructions for all 4 cards: Refer to photos.

card12-FoilingCut the parchment in half to separate the two images, fold the maze in two for a folded card and set aside. I used markers to color the butterfly and cut it out with cuticle scissors. That gave me a piece of paper to emboss for the Prim Poppy card. Then I foiled Mickey on white parchment using the blue foil. You can put all 3 images on single piece of paper, just make sure that you don't foil where you are using the paper as the back of a notecard. I just wasn't thinking ahead enough when I did mine, or the paper would have all 3 images on it, with Mickey opposite the butterfly. Download free images that are for consumer use. For the Butterfly card and the Mickey Mouse card, laser print the butterfly and the maze image in black and white on a single White Parchment sheet; I used the cover weight. Remember to set the laser printer settings for as dark as possible, print the butterfly and the maze, cover with foil, I used gold, and run through the laminator. I just used copy paper on either side of the parchment before I ran it through. I wanted to see if it worked and it did. Cut the foil to smaller sections to save foil. I did not tape my foil down, I was just very careful to cut enough to cover it. I was unsure if the tape would ruin the card surface. Run the foil one way, turn sideways and run again.card1-Mickey-1

Run Mickey through the laminator using blue foil, or your choice. Cut a white border around Mickey and using the red liner tape, attach it to the maze card. Fold the card and you are done.

card2-Butterfly-1For the Butterfly Card, I used Gunmetal Parchment, text weight (cover will work, too) and cut the paper into two cards from one 8.5 x11 inch paper. I folded both cards before I started working on them. For the butterfly card, I embossed the front of the card with the Cuttlebug folder. Cut the Pure Gold into a 3″ square and use Martha Stewart's punch on 2 corners. Cut the larger Tristan Butterfly using the Curious Skin, Indigo. Now assemble the pieces, using Red liner tape, referring to the photo. The top butterfly is the foiled one colored with markers. Card 2 is done.

card3-Flower-1This card has no foil. For the second small Gunmetal Parchment card, that you just folded, leave the card itself plain, and using Martha Stewart's corner punch, do all 4 corners on the front of the Gunmetal Parchment card. Cut a 4″ piece of White Parchment, emboss it with your Cuttlebug folder, inking it before you emboss it. Apply the Tim Holtz, Faded Jeans, to the part of the flowers that sticks up, inside the folder. You are applying the distress ink before you emboss it, being careful to wipe the parts where you don't want the ink, using a Q-Tip, or the corner of a baby wipe. Very carefully put the White Parchment paper into the folder and emboss. The ink will be in the debossed side. I tried it using the distress pad over the embossed side and didn't get good results. I couldn't control the color as well.. Cut the embossed paper to fit on the card to suit. Cut 3 Prim Poppies using the Curious Skin Indigo. Now assemble, using the Red Liner Tape and the Cosmic Shimmer Glue. Place the embossed paper – I angled mine – on the parchment. Add Red Liner tape around the embossed paper, to add a border, and use your gilding flakes on the tape. Use the Rub 'n Scrub to burnish the flakes. Use the glue to mount the Prim Poppies. Add some Cosmic Shimmer Glue around the top edges of the poppies and a few lines on top of them. Wait until the glue sits a bit and gild the lines. Mount the Jolee's flowers on top of that. Add Curious Skin, Indigo behind the front of the card for color and tape into place. Add pearls to the corners and card 3 is done.

card4-dress-1On White Parchment, I ran the antistatic powder pad over the parchment; sized 4.25 X 5.5 inches. Use Martha Stewart's glue stamp to stamp the image, using Rose Corset by Stampendous (which is 3.5 X 4 inches), and sprinkle loose laser toner refill over the card. Let it sit for a minute to stick and use a large soft brush to take off the excess, carefully.   Apply the green foil over it, fold some copy paper to use as a carrier, putting the image inside the fold, and run it through the laminator. Both ways. Cut the Gunmetal Parchment so the final card is 5 x 7 inches. Cut the Curious Skin, Emerald, so there is a border inside the Parchment. Using Martha Stewarts Hydrangea punch, or your choice, and edge one side, refer to the photo. Using the red liner tape, apply the green to the Gunmetal Parchment, apply the stamped and foiled card to the green layer and add more red liner tape to border the stamped image. Apply gilding flakes, burnish it, and add crystals at the corners and down the dress form. Add a blue flower from Jolee's set and you are done with the final card.

I hope you enjoyed making these as much as I did and adding the foiling to your cards.
